Synopsis: Four talented autistic musicians come together through their shared love of music and form the ASD Band. As they write, record, and perform their first album, they find strength in each other and the music. Immediately after the film, our featured guest, Melissa Heifetz, the Executive Director of the Arc of Northern VA, will lead our discussion and Q & A.

Snowy Shabbat Shalom Greetings to all the Religious School Families,
I hope you are staying warm, but also finding time to play in the beautiful white fluff on the ground! Yes, being from the midwest, I love a good snow every now and then.
After a wonderful Yom Tzedek last week, this week will seem pretty low key. Please know that I will not be at Religious School Sunday and Wednesday as I will be at the Association of Reform Jewish Educators (ARJE) Conference. I look forward to returning and sharing all that I learn from my colleagues across the country.
There are two important informational items on which I want to keep in the front of your minds:
Kindergarten through 3rd Grade Family Tefilah Experience (January 28th & February 11th from 10:00 to 10:30am): We are going to try something new during January and February. Changing up the typical start to the morning on Sundays for our youngest learners, we invite those families with Kindergarteners to 3rd graders to gather in the sanctuary, sit together, and begin the morning in prayer, together. Rabbi, Cantor, and I have created a special interactive experience that we cannot wait to share with you. Please be on time in order to experience it to the fullest extent possible.
Focus groups to prepare for the 24-25 year will begin on January 28th: Please consider joining one of the 4 focus groups to provide feedback for planning for next year. All meetings will take place in the Social Hall at Beth El at the times/dates below. Please let me know if you have any questions.
May we hear b'sorot tovot, good news, Dan

NFTY-MAR Winter Kallah Registration Extended to Friday, January 5th
I hope your Hanukkah celebration was as meaningful as it was fun. We all need some light in our lives, even during times of what feels like perpetual darkness.
A couple reminders as we head into the shortest days of the year:
If you participated in the Ambulance Campaign during Hanukkah, please bring in your envelopes or go to the donation page: ( tinyurl.com/BEHC-MDA ) to finalize your donations. You have until the end of the year to have your Hanukkah Pledge finalized.
Our 9th Night Hanukkah celebration sponsored by Netzer had to be canceled unfortunately due to low registration.
There is no religious school on December 20, 24, 27, and 30. I look forward to seeing everyone on January 3rd (4th to 7th grade) and January 7th (Everyone).
Thank you all for making my first half of the school year at Beth El Hebrew Congregation so special. I look forward to what the future will bring.

Good Morning, Religious School Families! Tonight, we begin the celebration of Hanukkah. It is our family’s tradition to set aside one night as a night of giving. In the past, we have brought cookies to the local fire department or collected food for our local pantry.
This year, we have decided to change it up a bit. After October 7th, everything changed. We are more in tune to our friends in Israel, checking on them more regularly. We (my wife and I) find ourselves answering more questions from our kids; about Israel, about how tough it is to be Jewish in America. For our giving this year, we will be participating in the Beth El Ambulance Campaign by saving money each night.
In addition, we will be having a friendly competition between the kids and adults to see who can be caught-being-kind, throughout the 8 days of Hanukkah. Each time one is caught we will add a quarter to their respective jar. Bragging rights for the year are on the line!
In the end, we will have a donation to the ambulance campaign from our family. What’s best is that this money will be matched by a generous donation, making our impact DOUBLE!
I encourage all religious school families to find ways this Hanukkah to donate as well. Whatever your family can do, it all adds up. Especially now, where every dollar is doubled! Stop by the Magen David Adom Table on Friday night or Sunday morning to pick up an envelope to help with your family’s tzedakah project.
I hope you have a Hanukkah filled with family and light.
May we hear b’sorot tovot*, good news.
Dan

This is a conversation for adults only.

One of the unsung heroes in our religious school is our Religious School and Youth Committee, known as RSY. This group of dedicated synagogue members meet monthly and serve the students and families of the religious school.
At one of our early meetings, the group suggested finding ways to build connections between the adult family members, focusing on our congregational values of mishpacha (family) & chesed (loving kindness). Out of these conversations, the following events have been created:
1.Wine Tasting at Nigus (for adults only): Negus is a new winery in Alexandria specializing in traditional Ethiopian Honey Wines. Both of these events are not possible without volunteers. If you would like to join RSY or support either of these events, please reach out to co-chairs Samantha Levine-Finely ( slevinefinley@gmail.com ) or Jesse Reisman ( me@jessereisman.com ) . This past week we welcomed in the Hebrew month of Cheshvan. After the previous month which included the Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah, this month is focused on settling back into a routine in which we lean into the reflection and excitement of those holidays, doing the work to make the coming year great. I hope you found some way in the previous month to prepare yourself for the coming year.
As any good educator will say, you spend the first part of the school year building strong routines in order to support learning later on. It is no coincidence that Jewish year and the school year begin similarly.
In our religious school, all of our programs are starting to settle into the normalcy of the year, with a more regular schedule. Over the past few weeks we have welcomed our 3-5 year olds to Shalom Chaverim, began trop with our 6th graders, and our regular student t’filah has kicked into high gear. The energy is building and our community is coming together.
A few key events are coming up of which to make you aware: 1. October 29th: B’nei Mitzvah Meeting for 6th Grade Families (10:15am): All 6th Grade Families are requested at a meeting to review the B’nei Mitzvah program this morning. Please make note of this date and plan to attend as it is an opportunity to get answers to questions that you may have. 2. November 10th: 6th Grade Student Led Services (7pm): Join our 6th graders as they lead our November Friday evening service. More information will be available soon, so mark your calendars. 3. November 11th: Shiru L’adonai: Family Friendly All Inclusive Shabbat Services: This Saturday morning Shabbat service is an opportunity for 3 generations to come together, observe the sabbath, and connect with each other. This service is perfect for all ages, specifically those with Kindergarten to 3rd graders, with extra music, stories, and a nosh afterwards. Be on the lookout for more information in the congregational weekly emails.
Finally, we will again open the Social Hall on Sunday morning for adults to come together to discuss the tragic events in Israel.

Resources for Talking to Kids about Israel At our last Family Affinity Group I shared the following resources to aid in navigating conversations with children. You can find these resources here: Israel Resources In addition, we shared the book, Justice Is…A Guide for Young Truth Seekers by Preet Bharara. Blessing of the Pets Join us this Saturday at 2pm (with or without your furry friends) to a special blessing of the animals in our lives. There will be alpacas and bunnies to pet, as well as an opportunity for our furry members to interact. Hope to see you there!
Parents Night Out Sponsored by WRJ Enjoy a night out on the town, while your little ones are here having fun.
Good Afternoon Religious School Families, Rabbi, Cantor, Liz, and I would be remiss to not share that many Jewish organizations and public schools are encouraging children to stay off platforms such as Tik Tok, Instagram, and YouTube. Even going as far as sharing that these apps should be deleted all together.
On Tuesday, I shared with you a warning about social media and our kids. As a synagogue, as an educator, and most importantly as a parent, I am strongly encouraging families to take a hard look at their children’s social media access and usage.
We have already witnessed Hamas’s psychological warfare through the use of it’s social media channels. In addition, the events have caused a world-wide spike in online hate speech targeted towards Jews. According to an article on USA Today, “The ADL counted 347 messages on Telegram from extremists calling for violence against Jews, Israelis and Zionists in the first 18 hours of Saturday, up approximately 488% from the day before.”
Ultimately, these decisions are family ones. It is compounded because we know that many of our children use these platforms to connect with each other, potentially about how they are dealing with these tragic days. I can tell you that yesterday, when our 6th and 7th graders were polled about whether they knew about what was going on in Israel, no less than 90% of our students raised their hands. Our kids already know.
Finally, I have fielded many emails already, and I am sure will continue to do so, about the nuances that families are struggling with when deciding what and when to talk to their own kids about the war in Israel. To support families, we will be offering a Family (Adult) Affinity Space on Sunday morning at 10:00am. This space is designed to connect parents struggling with some of the same questions, serve as a place for you to connect Rabbi & myself, and most importantly, to be with each other. So, grab a bagel, doughnut, or coffee at the BEHC Bagel Bar and join us for this open conversation.
As always, if you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Dan

The New Israel Fund and Temple Rodef Shalom Present: Israel’s Mass Protest: An evening with Israeli Protest Leader and Activist Shir Nosatzki Moderated by Rabbi Alexandra Stein Wednesday, October 18th 7:00 pm Temple Rodef Shalom 2100 Westmoreland St, Falls Church, VA Israel is at a critical juncture in its history. Many of us are watching in awe as week after week, for over eight months straight, hundreds of thousands of Israelis are taking to the streets to demonstrate against the government’s judicial overhaul and in support of democracy. This is by far the largest and most sustained mass protest movement to ever take place in Israel. To add to the magnitude of this historic moment, we’ve also witnessed Jewish communities across the US protesting in support of their brothers and sisters in Israel. What is motivating Israelis to take part in this struggle? What are the threats to Israel’s democracy? What is the vision of protest leaders for Israel’s future? And what role can our community here in the United States play? To answer these questions and more, please join us for a special evening with one of the young leaders at the forefront of the historic mass protest in Israel. Shir Nosatzki is a leading Israeli activist, organizer, and civil society changemaker who emerged as a core organizer of the mass protest. As the Co-Founder and Director of “Have you Seen the Horizon Lately?”, Shir brings the important issue of Jewish-Arab partnership into the forefront of the mainstream protest movement. You can view Shir speaking on the main stage at the Kaplan demonstrationhere

Happy Wednesday Religious School Families, It was great seeing everyone throughout the Rosh Hashanah weekend. Being able to wish each of you a Shana Tova as your Education Director was truly a highlight for me. The warm feelings I received from each of you reminded me of Rosh Hashanah’s back home in Illinois, but also cemented the decision my family made to come here to Beth El Hebrew Congregation.
This Sunday, we will not have religious school as we prepare for Yom Kippur. On Sunday night, I encourage everyone (including children) to attend Kol Nidre services. Kol Nidre is one of those unique melodies in Jewish liturgy that helps mark the holiest day on the calendar. Hearing it brings back memories for many people around the world, and is an important part of everyone’s Jewish identity. For me, it brings to mind memories of going to synagogue with my dad Erev Yom Kippur, sitting in the front row, wrapped in my dad’s tallit, and listening to the cantor sing.
I know that the service is late. If you are coming with young children, feel free to leave early or allow them to take a nap on you. Having this part of your child’s Jewish experience is worth more than staying for the complete service. Then, the following Friday night, September 29th, is Shabbat Sukkot and Consecration. Consecration is when we welcome those students new to religious school in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. It marks a beginning to a journey of Jewish education that includes 4th grade Siddur Passing, B’nei Mitzvah, and Consecration. It would be great to have a full house to celebrate this milestone as a community.
Services will begin at 6pm and be about 45-60 minutes, filled with song and an interactive story. Afterwards, we will fulfill the mitzvah of eating in the sukkah with a celebratory pasta dinner. This is free to all, but we request that you RSVP through the synagogue website . As a reminder, we will be back to Sundays for religious school on October 1st. Shana Tova U’metuka Dan
