Tour of President Lincoln’s Cottage and Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center

Wednesday, October 30, depart Beth El 10:15am; return 1:30pm (The bus will originate at the J) President Abraham Lincoln and his family resided seasonally on the grounds of the Soldiers' Home to escape the heat and political pressure of downtown Washington. Lincoln lived in the cottage June to November 1862 through 1864. During the first summer there, Lincoln drafted the preliminary draft of the Emancipation Proclamation. A reproduction of the desk where he drafted it is in the cottage (the original is in the White House). There will be time to visit the adjacent Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center which has exhibits about the Soldiers' Home, wartime Washington, D.C., Lincoln as Commander-in-Chief during the Civil War, and a special exhibit gallery.

There will not be a stop for lunch – you may bring food for the bus.

Fee: $28 (includes bus transportation and docent led tour)
