In Judaism, special moments in history and in the community are marked through celebrations and commemorations. The milestones in the lives of each individual are also an integral part of Jewish life. Using established life cycle rituals we reinforce our sense of community, and our link to both our past and future as Jews.
Ritual acts are mitzvot, acts of obligation, sanctifying our history, our ideas, and our land through acts that unite us in common practice.
There are four major life cycle events, covering the path of our lives from birth to death. Click on the links below to access more information about each topic.
Judaism has prescribed ways to mark the major life cycle events. Rites, rituals, and liturgies mark birth, coming of age, marriage, and death. They are relatively short, liturgically simple, and allow the participants to provide for a reflection of their personal values. They also are very positive and optimistic. The rituals surrounding birth involve the hopes and dreams of parents for their children; bar and bat mitvah rituals celebrate a time of transition; weddings consecrate the love of a couple; and funeral practices allow the mourners to honor a life and receive comfort from their community.
For any further information, or for information regarding marriage/wedding plans and arrangements, please feel free to call the temple office at 703-370-9400, or contact any of our clergy directly.
We hope that our offerings provide unique and fruitful family study and growth opportunities.
