The Program
Currently serving three families, the home provides a safe, supportive
and constructive environment. However, the supplemental support these
families receive from a professional case manager and child services
coordinator is the cornerstone of their success. Families in our program
receive life-skills training, education and/or job training, mental
health counseling, financial and credit counseling and parenting
classes.
Families may live at Beth El House for up to two years and also receive
a year of follow-up services upon their graduation. Residents are
required to follow house rules, attend house meetings, and pay a
subsidized rent. A family graduating from Beth El House leaves with
skills that will ensure their continued independent living and
self-sufficiency.
Beth El House is a leased single-family home in the Hybla Valley section
of Fairfax County, Virginia. The house is within walking distance of a
major hospital, the local police substation and fire station, and a
public library. Public transportation routes are convenient to the
residence. In consideration of the privacy of our residents, we do not
publicize the exact address.
A volunteer board of directors, mostly members of Beth El Hebrew
Congregation, is responsible for policy and oversight of Beth El House,
Inc. The Board meets monthly at Beth El Hebrew Congregation. Board
members are expected to actively support Beth El House, both financially
and by volunteering their time and skills. The board employs an
Executive Director, who administers day-to-day operation of the program.
The Resident Selection and Services Committee works closely with the
executive director and the case manager to oversee operations and ensure
that appropriate services are being provided to the residents of Beth El
House. This committee also interviews prospective residents and approves
admission into the program.
Beth El House contracts with a local agency, Good Shepard Housing and
Family Services, Inc., for social services support for our residents.
The assigned case manager works with our adult residents to help them
prepare for living independently. This support includes assistance and
instruction in managing personal finances, employment skills, parenting,
and household organization. The child services coordinator helps ensure
the well being of the resident children. The case manager provides
referrals to public social services for which the residents may be
eligible, including food stamps and public health care, and assists
residents in obtaining public housing as they prepare to leave Beth El
House. The case manager is also responsible for locating potential new
residents when a vacancy occurs, and referring promising candidates to
the Resident Selection and Services Committee for approval.
Volunteers and donors provide essential assistance to BEH and a resource
program provides one-on-one support to the adult residents and the
children.
Our
Resource program provides one-on-one support to the adult residents and the children, thanks to volunteers from Beth El Hebrew Congregation. The Resource program strives to provide residents with guidance in varied areas, depending on the needs and interests of the individual participants. Assistance in areas such as computer training, budgeting/personal finance, and GED or ESL tutoring can further assist the residents develop their independence.
